Six months after the debut of his first solo album, the former One Direction member has canceled his upcoming appearance at the Autism Rocks Arena in Dubai on Oct. 7 due to his continuing struggle with extreme anxiety. While the 23 year old says he is making progress, Malik does not feel prepared to face an audience in a month.
“I have been working over the last three months to overcome my extreme anxiety around major live solo performances,” Malik began in a statement to fans. “I feel I am making progress but I have today acknowledged that I do not feel sufficiently confident to move forward with the planned show in Dubai in October.”
Additionally, the “Pillowtalk” singer assured all ticket holders that purchases will be refunded. “I am truly sorry to disappoint you. I hope to see you all soon,” he concluded. “Thank you to all my fans who support me globally.”
Malik has battled his anxiety publicly in recent months, canceling his June appearance at London’s Capital Summertime Ball because he was suffering what he described as “the worst anxiety” of his career.
“Unfortunately, my anxiety that has haunted me throughout the last few months around live performances has gotten the better of me,” he wrote to fans on Twitter at the time. “I cannot apologize enough but I want to be honest with everyone who has patiently waited to see me. I promise I will do my best to make this up to everybody I’ve let down today.”
